Welcome to Helmsley Bowling Club.
Bowling is one of the world’s most under-appreciated sports. It’s absorbing; it’s complex; it’s great fun; and in North Yorkshire, there is no better place to play than Helmsley.
For over 80 years, this superbly manicured green – with its views over the ancient castle – has been home to Helmsley Bowling Club.
Every year from April to September, the place comes alive to the sound of hard-fought competition between members – and visitors – of all ages; drawn by the quiet beauty of the location AND the promise of good company and good sport.
“I couldn’t believe how quickly it all sucked me in,” says one of the 2024 intake. “Why didn’t I find it years ago?”
Whether you’re a complete beginner, or a seasoned competition bowler, Helmsley Bowling Club is the perfect place for you. Not only do we compete in two local leagues (Batagas and the Veterans) but we also pride ourselves on the vibrancy of our thrice-weekly social bowling; our internal club competitions AND our near-legendary summer barbecues!
How do you get involved? Well, you can just turn up for a free try-out on Tuesday/Sunday afternoons at 2pm, or on Thursdays at 6.15pm. Or you can contact our secretary
All you’ll need is a pair of flat shoes and a little curiosity. We’ll do the rest. And in 2025, it will cost new members LESS THAN £1 a week.
“If you haven’t tried it, you’re missing a whole world of joy.” says club coach Bill Jones. “Through bowls I’ve discovered a fascinating game, but much more importantly, a whole bunch of lovely new friends.”
